Students will learn the LISD Engineering Design Process, which is the process that engineers go through to solve a problem. They will demonstrate this process by being presented with a problem and using the step by step process of the Engineering Design Process to solve the given problem. Students will also demonstrate engineering practices with the application of math and science concepts. Students will explore different STEM careers and opportunities. Students will also recognize that science, technology, engineering and mathematics are all independent, but integrated content areas, as well. Students will explore technology applications through learning the basics of coding and robotics. Students can apply these skills to their everyday lives and towards improving our society and future.

Lewisville ISD Elementary Engineering Knowledge and Skills

Process Standards

  1. Engineering Process Standards. The student uses ongoing engineering processes to acquire, and demonstrate engineering practices with the application of math and science concepts.

A

Ask questions relevant to engineering premises that will drive research and problem-solving methods

B

Imagine solutions to engineering premises utilizing background knowledge and evidence from text or other sources

C

Plan solutions to engineering premises by organizing and applying content knowledge

D

Create solutions to engineering premises by selecting tools, following plans, engaging in teamwork, and applying critical thinking skills

E

Improve solutions utilizing new constraints, feedback, and performance of initial creations

F

Share findings from the engineering process to authentic audiences using academic vocabulary from math, science, technology, and engineering

Content Standards

(2) STEM Careers. The student understands the opportunities and careers in STEM fields

A

Recognize STEM careers such as, but not limited to, computer programmer, financial analyst, civil engineer, design engineer, mechanical engineer, environmental engineer, geological scientist, chemist, physicist, and software developer

B

Connect projects to real world problem solving and the work of STEM professionals within the community

C

Describe engineers as professionals that impact society through the development of solutions to real world problems

(3) STEM Content Connections. The student recognizes science, technology, engineering and mathematics as integrated but independent content areas. The student recognizes that all content areas such as art, music, social studies, and language arts are critical to engineering design.

A

Synthesize mathematics relationships and science knowledge through the creation of new technologies such as products, processes, and systems while using the engineer design process

B

Integrate art, reading, writing, social studies, and other bodies of knowledge into the development of products, processes, and systems using the engineering design process

C

Present new technologies created based on their ability to solve a problem

(4) Technology Applications. The student accesses, creates, and shares information through emerging technology

A

Explore simple programming languages

B

Build, test, and evaluate a robot design

C

Modify a robot design to respond to a change in specifications

D

Access, create, and share information using digital technology tools
